Trains of New England & More!
Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut
October 10 – 17, 2018

Day 1 - We will depart our hometown and head towards New England. We will have lunch on our own and comfort stops along the way, and arrive in Utica, New York, early evening. We will have dinner included this evening at a local favorite.

Day 2 - We will arrive at the train station to board the Adirondack Scenic Train and travel to Thendara. The tracks take you through remote forests, past sparkling rivers, over bridges, tranquil ponds and streams and into the magnificent beauty of the six million acre Adirondack Park. We will be witnesses of nature’s beauty and watch for the many animals and birds along the routes. When we arrive in Thendara, we will board the coach and travel just a short distance to Old Forge, New York, were we can visit the charming shops and have lunch on our own. After lunch, we will travel through the Adirondack Mountains and along the shores of Lake Champlain to Burlington, Vermont. We will gather for our included dinner at a historic restaurant.

Day 3 - After our breakfast we will head to downtown Burlington, and board the 434 passenger 'Spirit of Ethan Allen III' for a 1 ½ hour narrated scenic cruise. During the captain’s narration, learn of the region’s rich history, discover unique geologic formations and search for Champ, the lake’s friendly monster. We wil disembark the boat, and travel into the Green Mountains to one of the original Inns at Stowe Mountain Resort with it's amazing views. Enjoy lunch with the mountain views and fall’s display of color. Our next stop is at the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory for a tour and a taste of Vermont’s finest Ice Cream. Learn of the fascinating start of this iconic business. We will visit Morse Farm Sugarworks, where we will watch how real maple sugar is made, from the trees to the finished product, on a traditional Vermont maple sugar farm. You will tour the sugarhouse, sample maple syrup and visit the largest and most unique maple, crafts and mail order shop in the area. A traditional “sugar on snow party” will sweetly end your tour. We will continue to travel through the Green Mountains and into the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Feel instantly welcomed with Yankee hospitality when you check into our hotel. There will be time to refresh and relax and wash the ice cream and maple syrup off your chin before dinner at a casual, locally owned restaurant.

Day 4 - After our breakfast, we will head to the Conway Scenic Train, and enjoy an old-fashioned railroading experience as you journey on historic rail routes in vintage passenger cars, most of which are from the 1920’s. After our ride, we will have lunch on our own in one of the many eateries that line the streets in North Conway. After our lunch, travel to Squam Lake, covering 6,791 acres, Squam is the second-largest lake located entirely in New Hampshire and is where the 1981 movie, On Golden Pond, was filmed. Boarding a canopied pontoon boat, we will sail off on a fascinating and picturesque 50-minute cruise. Learn about the natural forces that created these lakes, the wildlife that makes them so special and the people who have enjoyed these lakes for over 5,000 years. Our next stop is in North Woodstock, where we will board the Café Lafayette Dinner Train for a two-hour, scenic train ride and 5-course meal. This train is recognized as one of the nation’s premier dinner trains. Discover a unique dining experience beyond your expectations.

Day 5 - We check out after breakfast and head “downeast” to the coast of Maine. Arriving at Kennebunk at the Seashore Trolley Museum, the world’s premier electric railway museum. The Seashore Trolley Museum’s exhibits in the Visitor Center, and throughout the 330-acre campus, offer a living history of public transportation with an emphasis on the origin and development of the transit industry and its contributions to modern society. Today, the collection contains over 250 transit vehicles, most of them trolley’s, from all over the United States, Canada and many other countries. This is the oldest, and largest electric railway museum in the world. We will climb aboard for a 30-minute ride back to yesteryear aboard an authentically restored streetcar. From the museum, arrive at the charming seaside Town of Kennebunkport. Visit the shops and boutiques on Dock Square and have lunch on your own. This is a great opportunity to sample the freshest seafood imaginable. We will travel south along the Atlantic shoreline and into cranberry country for a tour at a cranberry bog. Learn about the history, harvest and commerce of cranberries. We will Depart cranberry country late afternoon and make our way to Waterbury, Connecticut. We will stop in Olde Lyme just in time for our included dinner served at a casual tavern-style eatery.

Day 6 - After breakfast we will board the coach to travel west to Scranton, Pennsylvania at the Steamtown National Historic Site. Feel the heat from the firebox, smell hot steam and oil and hear the whistle blow. Feel the ground vibrate and watch as one-ton drive-rods turn steel wheels. Remember the sound of “chuff-chuff” from the smokestack? Today we will learn the history of steam railroad transportation, and the people who built, repaired and rode them, as the museum works to preserve a special era in the American Industrial history. Our visit includes a ½ hour train ride. We will depart the site and travel a short distance into historic downtown Scranton. Arrive at the Radisson Lackawanna Station House Hotel. Originally a French Renaissance-style train station in 1908, the hotel retains its nostalgic charm. Marvel at the marble columns and the Tiffany stained-glass ceiling. Gather for an included luncheon served at a local restaurant. After lunch there will be time to explore the downtown area. We will then travel to Lancaster, Pennsylvania where we will dine on southern fare.

Day 7 - We will eat breakfast before meeting our local guide and travel into Amish Country where we will be escorted on a fascinating two-hour back-in-time tour. See picturesque countryside and farmland, pass buggies, cross one of the area’s two covered bridges, and learn about the Amish lifestyle. Visit a shop located right on an Amish farm and meet the owner. We will then visit the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, to discover a fascinating, world-class collection of more than 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, as well as the art, artifacts and captivating personal stories of Pennsylvania’s rich railroad heritage. Your visit includes a 20-minute orientation tour of museum, followed by time to explore on your own. We will then walk across the street to the Strasburg Railroad. Board the larger than life steam train and enjoy a 45-minute, round-trip ride through the tranquil Amish countryside to Paradise, Pennsylvania and back. Marvel at more than 1,000 acres of farm fields as they pass by your window. There will be time to explore the gift shop after the ride. We will enjoy an included lunch at the Hershey Farm Restaurant. We then have reserved seating for 'Jesus' at the Sight & Sound Theatre. This evening we will be the guest of Lydia, for an Amish home cooked meal, made by her family from home grown ingredients, from vegetables to the meat and freshly brewed mint tea. You can take home some of her home made jams, jellies, pickles or bread to enjoy at home.

Day 8 - After breakfast we will head home, with lunch and rest stops made en route.
